Players back in training

The majority of the Somerset squad returned for pre-season training today.

The players were back at the Cooper Associates County Ground for the first time ahead of the 2017 campaign and they spent the day taking part in fitness testing with Darren Veness (Head of Strength & Conditioning) and Jamie Thorpe (Lead Physiotherapist).

Director of Cricket Matt Maynard is pleased that the squad is back together following the winter break.  “It’s great to have all the lads back in,” he said.  “It’s always an exciting time of year and it’s always nice to see everyone catching up and telling stories about what they’ve been doing over the last few months.  These few days are really about ensuring that everyone is where they need to be ahead of our pre-season camp in Desert Springs.  Daz and Jamie have been testing the guys today and they are really pleased with what they’ve seen so far.  Those two have been in constant contact with everyone over the winter to make sure that they’ve been looking after themselves and everyone is where they should be, so we couldn’t be happier.”

Club Captain Tom Abell is now back on home soil after a winter spent in Australia and he is pleased to be back in training.  “It’s been great to catch up with everyone and we’ve got a really close-knit group here,” he said.  Everyone gets on so well and it’s been really good to see everyone again.

“Today has really been about fitness testing and things like that.  We’ve also had a few different meetings.  We’ve basically got to get the less fun things out of the way before we can get started with pre-season.  It’s about making sure that everyone is up to scratch and in good physical condition before we get cracking!”

“Although I’ve been away in Perth I’ve been thinking a lot about the upcoming season and my new role.  I’m really excited about being Captain.  It’s going to be a real challenge but it’s something that I am massively looking forward to.  I’ve been doing some reading and coming up with a few ideas.  I’ve also been in touch with Chris Rogers about captaincy.  At the end of the day I’ve got to be strong and believe in myself a little bit and the help of people like Marcus and the other senior players is going to be invaluable.”
