Latest from Desert Springs: Part Two

Desert Springs departure

With the whole squad currently in Spain at a pre-season training camp at Desert Springs, it’s quite quiet at the Cooper Associates County Ground!

Fortunately Dom Bess has just sent us the first installment of his tour diary!

At 9am on Monday we all arrived at Taunton Vale to begin the pre-season trip up to Birmingham to fly over to Desert Springs.  We had a couple of incidents on our way which included Passports but they were all sorted before we checked in at Birmingham.  We then had a 2 hour flight which was a little more bumpy than expected and once we landed we had another 2 hour bus ride to the resort.

On Tuesday we had a white ball session to get back into the grove.  For the lads who have been away, it was nice to get back together with the whole squad and the coaches.  I felt like I was back into the normal routine.  For the lads who haven’t been away this winter it was a good chance to get a feel of the outdoor nets and the bowlers were relieved to be running out on grass instead of the indoor centre.  After the nets we had a quick lunch then headed up to the gym to carry out a session which was conducted by Daz.  This was a high velocity squat session that all the boys carried out.  In the afternoon we had a couple of hours off and a few of the lads started their preparation for the “Cyder Cup” on the driving range whilst others, including myself, got our preparation underway for the massive FIFA tournament which would commence after dinner!

On Wednesday morning we started off with a red ball session after breakfast and this lasted until lunch time.  After our lunch break we then had a really good fielding session with Paul Tweddle.  It was a really good induction back into fielding and we were able to really increase the volume while we had the sun.  Both sessions were pretty intense so once again we were given a few hours off in the afternoon.  However, a lot of the lads elected to have some extra hits.  After Dinner we had a meeting down in the cinema room to go through our goals and aims with our newly appointed Club Captain Abes.  This included an official warm welcome to Steve Davies, myself, George Barlett and Ben Green who have all recently joined the staff.

Thursday began with breakfast at 7:30am and then it was time for the “Cyder Cup” golf tournament!  We had the official photo and then tee off with the team captains which ended up with Daz slicing his and hitting the trees 20 yards away.  Thorpey then hit his about four yards away.  There was some exceptional golf played and some not so exceptional golf too!  In the end it was a comfortable win for Team Veness.  After the excitement of this we spent the afternoon doing some gym and pool work.

Cyder Cup

These first few days have been really positive and it’s nice to get back out with the lads and get back into the nets.  We are all really looking forward to the nets in the next few days before we return to the Cooper Associates County Ground for the pre-season games.

Dom will be letting us have a second installment in a few days!
