Royal Navy train at the Cooper Associates County Ground

The Royal Navy cricket team recently spent a day training at the Centre of Excellence at the Cooper Associates County Ground as part of their build up to the 2017 season.

The squad has trained at the Ground on previous occasions and were delighted to renew their acquaintance with the facilities that Somerset made available to them.

Team Captain Jon Grasham said: “ This is our second pre-season training session together.  We always enjoy coming to Taunton and making use of the great facilities at Somerset.  We feel very privileged to be able to do so.  Four hours of training like this early season is hard work but the boys love it and are always happy to make the trip here.  We also hold another training session at the Ageas Bowl later on.

“We start our fixtures in the first week of May so there are a few weeks yet to get our games in order.  We normally play our T20 games in the early part of the season over five or six weeks and then similarly we go into our 50-over matches.  Then our inter-services competitions take place at the back end of August.

“Our showcase fixture will be at Lord’s where we play the Army and the RAF in a T20 fixture in front of a large crowd and that will be in August.  It’s quite difficult to keep the team together as we can be based at a number of different venues at anytime, so it’s good to be able to get everybody together like this.”

The RN skipper added: “I know that Somerset CCC has quite a strong link with the Royal Navy with 40 Command of the Royal Marines being just down the road, so this is our preferred option for a combined training session.”
