Academy players return from India

Five members of the Somerset Academy and Ben Green have just returned from their 10-day spin camp to India.

Regarding the camp Steve Snell, the Director of the Academy said: “It was a great experience for everybody who was involved including (Fielding Coach) Paul Tweddle and myself for lots of different reasons.  The guys were challenged hard in a cricket-crazy country.  The quality of the practice was high and so was the level of learning, as well as the experience of playing cricket out in India where the game is a way of the life.  The people were just fantastic and the way that they treated us was brilliant to see.

“From my point of view the investment in taking our young players out to India was better than expected regarding the amount of cricket that the boys got to play on tough pitches.  It certainly is something that I would like to repeat in the future.”

Steve went on: “We took just a small group with us of five Academy players and one professional and I definitely think that those guys will benefit in the long term.  The young pro who went with the group was Ben Green who is in the final stages of making a full recovery from a stress fracture of the back, and who stepped in to take the place of Louie Shaw who was called up for the England Under 19s at short notice.

“Ben has been on England camps in the past but this was a real opportunity for him to develop his game specifically against spin and the feedback from him has been really positive.  The knock on effect is that our Academy players got the opportunity to see how he prepares.  Ben is very experienced for his age given the level of interaction he has had on England programmes and some of the Academy players really grasped what you have to do to train as a professional.  He is a fantastic role model for someone so young.”

On his return Ben couldn’t speak highly enough about the Academy trip.  “It was an amazing experience and I had such a great time,” he said.  “It was completely different to anything that I’ve been on and this was the first real training camp that I’ve attended.  I feel like that in itself has led to more development in my own game, so I was really happy with how the 10 day trip went.”

Ben added: “It was a great opportunity and I really appreciate Matt Maynard and Steve Snell getting me a place on that trip.”
