It’s going to be a busy few weeks for Lewis Gregory.
The 24 year old allrounder has been selected to attend the Tom Maynard Academy, will be heading to Desert Springs for Somerset’s pre-season training camp, will be lining up for the South against the North in the three-match 50-over series in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and will also represent MCC against Middlesex in the Champion County match.
Looking ahead to his hectic schedule Lewis said: “Obviously it’s really good for me to be involved in so many different things at this time of the year. To be playing good quality, competitive cricket in the winter gives you a chance to hone your skills and get used to being outdoors on the grass. It’s something that I’m really looking forward to. It also means that by the time we get to April I should be ready to go!”
“At this time of year it’s usually a case of just doing what you can indoors but nothing really replicates getting out there and batting and bowling on grass. Obviously there are different characteristics and feelings when it comes to indoors and outdoors and there’s no substitute for the real thing. We’ve got a lot of players abroad at the moment and they’re all in good form so hopefully that will put us in a good place come the start of the season. Hopefully it will act as some really good prep for when it all starts.”
Lewis is particularly looking forward to the Champions County match in which he and Jack Leach will play for MCC against Middlesex in a four-day match in Abu Dhabi at the end of March. After just missing out on the Specsavers County Championship title to the team from Lord’s is Lewis hoping to get one over on the Champions? “Definitely,” he joked. “It’s a real honour to be selected for this match and hopefully we can go out there and put in a good performance. It will be great to be playing alongside Jack. What he did for us last summer was seriously impressive. He’s a great character to be around and you want him out there with you because you can just feed off the energy and enthusiasm that he has for the game.”
Lewis added: “Both the MCC match and the North v South competition are really exciting trips to be on and both squads are very strong with some very good cricketers involved. It’s going to be a busy few weeks but I can’t wait to get started.”
