Jamie Overton has received some good news this week.
The Somerset fast bowler suffered a stress fracture in his back in July which put him out of action. However, the 22 year old has now been given the green light to return to training.
“I’ve had my scan results and I’ve been given the all clear,” he said. “The stress fracture has healed so now we can move forward and start getting ready for next season. It’s straight back in to full training for me with the lads at the Cooper Associates County Ground. I need to be a bit careful about what kind of loads I can do to start with. The gym work will be fine, it’s just the running that we need to keep an eye on and we’ll gradually begin to increase that as the weeks go on.”
Jamie was selected to be a part of the England Pace Programme which will see a number of players heading to the High Performance Institute of Sport in Potchefstroom for warm-weather altitude training in the New Year. Following this week’s news, he is now confident of being able to make that trip. “We’ve had a few conversations about that this week and the main thing for me at the moment is getting to where I need to be,” he said. “But I’m confident that I’ll be able to link up with the other bowlers in Potchefstroom in the New Year because I won’t start bowling until after Christmas.”
Jamie explains why he is so keen to make that trip: “Training outside is much more beneficial than training inside ahead of the new season. You need to get used to bowling outside as soon as possible. The longer you can be outside, the better prepared you will be for the new season. It bodes well for us because Craig and Leachy are out with the Lions at the moment, so they’ll be raring to go by the time the new season comes around. We’ve got a lot of players overseas this winter so they will be more than ready to go by the time the first game comes around.”
