Somerset’s George Bartlett and Tom Banton from the Academy will be flying out to Dubai this weekend to spend three weeks attending a training camp followed by several matches with the England Young Lions.
18 year old top order batsman and occasional off spinner George was awarded a one-year contract back in September after graduating from the Academy and he will be joined by 17 year old batsman/wicket-keeper Tom who is currently on the Somerset Academy.
George, who was formerly at Millfield School, scored a century for England Under 19′s against Sri Lanka this summer and enjoyed considerable success playing for both Somerset Second XI and Bridgwater in Premier One of WEPL. Ahead of the trip he said: “Obviously I’m delighted to have been selected and it will be good to get away for a few weeks, especially at this time of the year. It will be great to get out and bat on grass again and in the sunshine as well.”
Tom also enjoyed a hugely successful summer for King’s College, Taunton St Andrew’s and Somerest Second XI. “I’m hugely excited about the trip,” he said. “I’ve been looking forward to it for the last few weeks. Since I first found out I have been buzzing so I can’t wait to get away now. I’ve been away on overseas tours before but representing your country will be a lot different, so I can’t wait to get going now.”
The Young Lions fly to Dubai on Saturday after which they have a day’s rest before training everyday. The tour ends with a three-day game and two one-day matches against local opposition before the party flies back home two days before Christmas. At the end of their Dubai trip George and Tom will be hoping to get selected to go to India with the Under 19′s after Christmas.
A third Somerset player, Ben Green was originally chosen to go with the Young Lions, but unfortunately he will be unable to make the trip due to a back injury he suffered at the end of the season.
