This weeks Academy and Emerging Player Programme Induction Evening has been hailed as a great success.
The evening took place in the 1875 Club on Tuesday and was attended by all of the members of the Somerset Academy and those young players who are on the Emerging Player Programme as well as their parents. Also present were a large number of the members of staff who will be involved with the young players during their time on the scheme.
The evening was hosted by Academy Director Steve Snell who introduced Chief Executive Guy Lavender who welcomed everyone and gave a brief outline of the importance of the Academy in the Club’s Performance Plan.
Somerset Cricket Board Head Coach Greg Kennis gave an overview of the Emerging Player Programme, after which Ian Thomas from the Professional Cricketers Association spoke about the role the organisation plays. Fielding Coach Paul Tweddle talked about the Somerset CCC Culture, after which Steve Snell talked further about the Academy and exactly what the expectations were of the youngsters and their parents.
Members of the SCCC staff who are involved on the Academy and EPP were introduced individually before Jack Leach, who graduated through the Academy, was interviewed about some of the difficulties he has had to overcome on his way to gaining selection for the England Lions this winter.
Lead Physiotherapist Jamie Thorpe and Head of Strength & Conditioning Darren Veness gave an introduction in to the Science and Medicine Department at Somerset before Digital Executive Ben Warren talked about the importance of social media in the modern game.
In addition National Performance Manager for the ECB David Graveney was present and talked to the young players.
Afterwards, Steve Snell said: “The feedback from the parents and other key stakeholders regarding the event has been brilliant and in my opinion it showcased the Club in an excellent light, showing off our outstanding new facilities, our excellent catering team and some highly impressive digital content. The fact that so many different members of staff collaborated seamlessly to create a great experience for our youngsters and their parents is really pleasing and highlights what a great team of people we have across the departments.”
