Fast bowler Nathan Gilchrist, who attends King’s College in Taunton, has joined the Somerset Academy.
Earlier in the summer the tall 16 year old played for Somerset Second XI against Sussex and also appeared for the County Under 19 side later in the season.
On signing his contract the young paceman said: “I’m really pleased to have joined the Somerset Academy. It’s great to be around all of the professional players and getting exposure to them and what they do. There’s a really high standard at Somerset so I’m looking forward to becoming part of their Academy.”
“I had a good season at school this year and took a few wickets and I’ve also played one game for Somerset Second XI and one Under 19 match, both of which were three dayers. They both went well for me and it was great for me to play alongside the more experienced players.”
He added: “Now I’m really looking forward to a winter training hard with the Academy and then playing again next summer.”
Steve Snell, Director of the Somerset Academy, said: “ Nathan impressed during the summer with not only real pace and bounce that he created from an uncomfortable height, but also with his excellent attitude plus his clear desire to improve and take every opportunity he is given. I’m very excited about what the future may hold for Nathan and this winter represents an excellent opportunity for him to continue to improve and to begin what is hopefully a long and exciting journey with Somerset.
