Busy winter for Somerset squad

Although the cricket season is over for another year, there will be very little rest for the Somerset squad as the majority of the players will be heading abroad to play this winter.

Four First XI players will be playing in Australia with two of them having made solid starts for their new clubs already.  Tom Abell made 40 from 54 balls for Fremantle as they amassed 269 for five against Midland-Guildford in their Western Australia First Grade match.  He also secured a run out for his side.

Adam Hose was also amongst the runs as his impressive 73 not out from 88 balls helped Kensington CC to an eight wicket win over Port Adelaide.  Dom Bess will also be heading down-under to play in Adelaide this winter whilst Jim Allenby will be coaching and playing for Claremont-Nedlands in Perth.

Jack Leach and Craig Overton will be part of an 18-man Lions squad for a training camp in Dubai in November and December, including three 50-over matches for England Lions against the United Arab Emirates at the ICC Academy and a three-day match against Afghanistan in Sharjah.  This will be led by Andy Flower.

It is hoped that Jamie Overton will join up with the ECB’s Pace Programme once he has recovered from injury.  This programme will see a number of young bowlers combine training with their counties and at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough before Christmas, and then traveling to the High Performance Institute of Sport in Potchefstroom for warm-weather altitude training in the New Year.

Max Waller is currently in Cape Town playing for Milnerton where he got off to a good start against Tygerberg taking four for 23 and scoring 43.  He then followed that up with figures of six for nine from 3.2 overs in a T20 match.  Tim Groenewald will also be heading for South Africa to play in Pietermaritzburg.

Johann Myburgh will be carrying out work at an independent school in Suffolk whilst Roelof van der Merwe, Paul van Meekeren, Josh Davey and Michael Leask will have international commitments in the New Year with the Netherlands and Scotland

George Bartlett and Ben Green will both be involved with the ECB’s Young Lions Under 19 Programme and Eddie Byrom will be playing in New Zealand in Canterbury whilst Tim Rouse and Ollie Sale will be returning to university.

Ryan Davies, Steve Davies, Peter Trego, Lewis Gregory, James Hildreth and Marcus Trescothick will be remaining in Taunton to carry out their pre-season work at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

The entire squad will all meet up in March in Taunton to begin their full pre-season programme.
