Somerset 2nd XI v MCC Young Cricketers – Day Three

Somerset resume a Second XI Championship match against MCC Young Cricketers this morning at High Wycombe where play is due to commence at 11am. The weather is warm and sunny and a full day of cricket is expected

Day One

After winning the toss, captain Tom Abell chose to bat first at High Wycombe. After the early loss of Abell (0), Adam Hose and Tim Rouse took the score onto 44 before Hose was bowled by Webster for 27. That brought 17-year-old Tom Banton to the crease and he settled well, combining with Rouse to see Somerset past the hundred mark. Banton reached 58 before he was LBW to Sivarajah. His innings coming from 64 balls and including 8 fours and a six. Shortly before the interval Rouse went to his half-century and remained unbeaten on 50 at lunch with the score 152 for three from 32 overs. Sam Underdown has 5 not out.

After lunch Underdown was dismissed for 15, LBW to Sivarajah, but Rouse carried on batting in glorious but challenging conditions. He played really nicely but was out LBW for 83 from 153 balls. Eddie Byrom and Michael Leask shared a promising partnership for the 6th wicket before Leask was caught at bowled for 31. At the tea interval Byrom was 50 not out, with Ben Green yet to score. Somerset after 72 overs are 288/6.

The evening session brought about more runs for the Somerset lower order, with Byrom reaching 69 before he was dismissed. Ben Green  was unbeaten on 44 and Ollie Sale chipped in with 21 not out before the declaration came with Somerset 378 for seven from 85 overs.

With ball in hand, Sale and Green both took a wicket each as the MCC Young Cricketers reached 79 for two at the close of play on day one.

Day Two

3 wickets for Ben green was the standout for Somerset in a morning in which the MCC Young Cricketers fought back well at High Wycombe. Resuming 79/2, several of the home batsmen made use of a good pitch as they reached 295/4, which is still 83 behind the Somerset total. Lezar and Solia were the pick, coming in with the score 125/4 and sharing an unbroken century partnership.

Solia continued on throughout the day as the MCC Young Cricketers continued to pile on the runs, eventually reaching the close 588/8 with Solia dismissed by Liam Redrup for 170. Ben Green was the pick of the Somerset bowlers with 4 for 101 from his 22 overs.

Day Three

Play is due to recommence at 11am for the final day of this Second XI Championship fixture. The MCC Young Cricketers currently lead by 210 runs with 2 1st innings wickets in hand.

The visitors declared on their overnight 588/8 and set about their task of bowling Somerset out. Despite 39 from Tom Abell and 38 from Sam Underdown, the visitors were bowled out for 171 to lose by an innings and 39 runs.
