Jamie Overton will miss the England Lions Tri-Series against Pakistan A and Sri Lanka A later this month after picking up an injury in Somerset’s current Specsavers County Championship match against Middlesex.
Somerset CCC Lead Physiotherapist Jamie Thorpe outlined what the injury is: “Jamie suffered a lower back injury whilst bowling in the first innings of this match,” he said. “This will unfortunately keep him out of the upcoming Lions series. The Somerset medical team will be undertaking more investigations over the next few days so that Jamie has the appropriate plan in place over the coming weeks. The length of his rehabilitation will be determined by the results of some more tests that are due to be carried out and a definitive timescale for his return to action is not yet known.”
Jamie Overton said: “Obviously this is a major blow. It’s always an honour to get international recognition so I’m gutted to be sitting this series out. It’s really frustrating because I feel that I’ve been playing well for Somerset recently. It’s now just a case of working with the medical team to make sure that I come back as good as new. It’s part and parcel of professional sport and now I’ll just focus on my recovery.”
Somerset Director of Cricket Matthew Maynard said: “It’s a real shame for Jamie. He has been bowling really well recently and the spell he bowled against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl was outstanding. He’s in the best possible hands now and we look forward to him coming back and doing what he does best, and that is taking wickets for Somerset.”
