Mahela ready for Blast off!

The NatWest T20 Blast is back and Somerset fans are in for a real treat on Friday night when we welcome Essex to the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Two of the biggest names in world cricket will be lining up for Somerset as Chris Gayle and Mahela Jayawardene take to the field with the famous Wyvern on their chests.

After his remarkable performances in last years competition, Somerset fans will be looking for more of the same from Chris Gayle who smashed his way to an amazing 328 runs in his three matches.  In that time the “Universe Boss” helped himself to an incredible 22 fours and 29 sixes.

Whilst Mahela is a different type of batsman, his record speaks for itself and he is a proven match winner who helped Sri Lanka to win the T20 World Cup in 2014.  Since 2004 the 39 year old has scored 4797 runs in T20 cricket and ahead of his NatWest T20 Blast debut for Somerset he said: “I am really looking forward to coming to Taunton and playing cricket for Somerset this year.

“Everyone thinks that T20 cricket is just about the big hitters but you need guys to bat for 20 overs so that’s where different types of batsmen come into play and I have always enjoyed it.  T20 is a different sort of challenge.  Your mindset is different and your approach tactically is different as well and that’s why people like it.  It’s a fast game and the decision making process is very quick so you need to be pretty much on the ball all of the time because a few balls or a few overs can alter the game.”

The Sri Lankan is also looking forward to playing alongside Chris Gayle.  “It’s easy when you bat with Chris,” he said.  “When he’s on song you just need to take a single and be a spectator at the other end, so I’m looking forward to that.”

Mahela has played at Taunton on five previous occasions one of which was in the 1999 World Cup match against India about which he said: “I was a young kid at that time and it was my first World Cup and we got slaughtered by the Indians.  I remember a few balls landing in the river and not coming back which are not pleasant memories but definitely fond memories.”

He added: “When I played for Sussex last year we had a game at Taunton and it was brilliant.  There was a great crowd in the ground and I enjoyed that.  I am looking forward to playing there on Friday and wearing the home colours and I’m sure that it will be brilliant.”
