Anya Shrubsole has described being named as the new vice captain of the England Women’s Cricket team as a massive honour.
The 24 year old, who hails from Bath, grew up playing for the Somerset age group teams and was part of the Academy at the County Ground alongside the likes of Jos Buttler and Jack Leach.
Anya made her debut for England in 2008 since when she has played in 47 T20 Internationals in which she has claimed 68 wickets at 12.79 runs each. She has also played in 34 ODI’s in which she has taken 42 wickets at 22.71 and four Test Matches where she has taken 16 wickets at 22,50.
Talking about her appointment Anya said: “To be made vice captain of the England Women’s team is a massive honour. Just to play for your country is an honour but to be given the vice captaincy is even more so. Every time that I put on the England shirt it feels really special because not too many players are that fortunate. I am lucky enough to have that chance and every time I step out to play for my country it is a very special occasion.”
Once again this year Somerset will be hosting the England Women for an ODI on June 27th about which Anya said: “It’s always lovely to play at your home ground and as a Somerset girl to be able to play for England at the Cooper Associates County Ground gives it that extra bit of meaning.”
The England bowler talked about the help she has received from people in Somerset. “I have had a massive amount of support from people in Somerset,” she said. “Obviously I played all of my cricket growing up with Bath CC and for the county age group teams. The years that I was on the Somerset Academy played a massive part in getting me to where I am today. I think that without that I wouldn’t have played for England as soon as I did or maybe even at all. That really did help me with my development, so I owe a huge amount to the coaches at Somerset so for getting me to where I am today.”
