Somerset Second XI recorded an impressive victory in the first of two T20 matches against Hampshire today.
Batting first at the Cooper Associates County Ground, openers Tom Abell and Ryan Davies got the home team off to a flyer before Abell was dismissed for 18 from 10 balls. Davies continued flaying the visitors all around the ground until he was out for 51 from just 32 balls. His innings included 2 fours and 3 big sixes.
The next significant partnership was between Adam Hose and Michael Leask, who put on 117 runs in 9.1 overs. Hose smashed several sixes into the leg side, including one that landed into the river, as Somerset raced past the 200 mark. He was eventually bowled by McCoy for 72 from 40 balls, including 4 fours and 5 sixes.
Michael Leask played nicely for his 44 from 30 as the home side registered 221 for four in their 20 overs.
The Hampshire reply never really got going and wickets fell at regular intervals throughout. Despite Hay’s 44 from 19 balls, the visitors ended on 164/9 and lost the match by 57 runs. David Rhoda, a 22 year old leg spinner who plays his cricket at North Petherton, recorded figures of 3 for 44 from his 4 overs. Tom Abell chipped in with 2 for 23, also from 4 overs.
In the second game Hampshire won the toss and batted first but with the score on 7 Abell claimed a wicket with the third ball of the second over that brought Adam West into join opener Lewis McManus who shared a partnership of 97 together before West was out for 44.
McManus remained at the crease until the end of the innings by which time he had moved onto 118 and Hampshire had moved onto 204 for 6, Abell, Waller, Leask and Rhoda all claiming a wicket apiece.
When Somerset replied they lost Davies to the first ball of the innings, which brought Abell into join Eddie Byrom who together took the total onto 42 when Byrom was out for 32 off 13 balls with four 4s and two 6s, while Abell scored 23.
Lower down the order Waller hit 30 and Leask hit a brisk 23 off 13 balls with two 4s and a 6 as Somerset reached 162 for 9 leaving Hampshire the winners by 42 runs.
