Somerset will face Durham in their opening Specsavers County Championship opening match of the 2016 season on Sunday without the services of Jamie Overton.
The fast bowler, who along with his brother celebrates his 22nd birthday on the first day of the game, is undergoing treatment for an injury he sustained during the first warm up match against Gloucestershire two weeks ago.
Jamie Thorpe, the Somerset Physio said: “Jamie has got a mild tear to the calf muscle in his right leg, which he suffered at the start of the Gloucestershire match, since when we have been working with him to ideally for the match against Durham on April 10th.
“However we now think that is a little bit too soon so we are reassessing to make sure that we get him right because there is a long season.
“Unfortunately for Jamie he wasn’t responding as quickly as we would have liked so now we have ruled the Durham match out.
“Potentially the next match on the radar for Jamie is the game against Surrey on April 24th, and before that the coaches will want him to prove his fitness and the match with Cardiff gives us that opportunity on April 17th.
The Somerset physio added: “However at the end of the day it is about making sure that Jamie isn’t going to suffer any re-occurrence of the injury so we want to make sure that he is as fit and strong as he can be, and we cant put an exact time frame on that.”
