Somerset all rounder Lewis Gregory returned to the Cooper Associates County Ground recently.
The 23 year old spent three months out in Western Australia where he carried on with his rehab and also got some cricket under his belt. Now he is heading out to south east Spain with the rest of the Somerset squad on their pre-season training camp.
Shortly after his return Lewis said: “It’s always good to be back in Taunton and catch up with everyone even though it’s a little bit on the chilly side! Australia was a really good trip for me. It was good to be able to work alongside Tom Abell and Jack Leach and we had a great time. We worked really hard on our batting, our fitness and on our own bowling skills. Of course I would have liked to have scored a few more runs than I did, but I feel like I have developed as a batter and I hope that I can show that this summer.”
How close to being back to full fitness is he? “My body feels really good,” he said. “Over the winter I have put a lot of work in with Jamie Thorpe (SCCC Physio) and Daz (Darren Veness, SCCC Head of Strength & Conditioning) and this year we have gone at things slightly differently to how we have done the last few winters and the response has been really good. Bowling-wise I have been going through my drills since the end of January and I’m now off about half a run and the body feels good. Hopefully on the pre-season trip to Spain we can progress with that and get off a full run up and back to flat out by pre-season.”
Talking ahead of the training camp Lewis said: “It will good to get away with the guys for a week or 10 days on our own. There are a few things we are looking to work on and it will be great to get out into the warm again and get stuck into some cricket. Once we get back from Desert Springs we are pretty much into our first warm up games so it will come about pretty quickly. Everybody is really excited and looking forward to getting cracking again and get 2016 underway and see where we can get to this season. This is always an exciting time and you just want it to get started now and get the first game out of the way.”
Last season Lewis bowled more overs than anybody else, so what was he expecting this coming summer? “We all know it is a good wicket here at Taunton,” he said. “As a bowler you know that you are going to have to bowl a decent amount of overs and we are fully expecting to have to do that and for the next five months that’s what its all about.”
Talking about the Club’s overseas signings Lewis said: “A few of the lads know Chris Rogers from playing with him at other counties and by all accounts I think he will be terrific on the pitch and in the dressing room. We know his record and he is a high quality performer who will churn out the runs so on that front he will be really good for us. Having Chris Gayle back with us is a serious signing. We played with him last year and I was a little bit star struck at times at what he could do, but hopefully this year we will be able to support him a little bit better. It’s great that he will be back and we can’t wait to see him hitting the ball to everywhere again.”
Lewis added: “All of the work the lads have put in over the winter is for this time of the year. You just want the season to come around and get out there and perform to the best of your ability.”
