The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP was joined by Taunton MP Rebecca Pow in the opening speeches on the implications of the Government’s growth agenda for businesses at today’s event.

The event was organised by the Council’s Economic Development team to showcase development and investment opportunities in the Borough and inform businesses of planned improvements to infrastructure.

The Conference focused on two key themes – connectivity across road, rail and digital infrastructure; and growing your business in Taunton.

It featured a number of influential speakers of relevance to Taunton’s Growth Agenda including The Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership, Summerfield Developments, EDF Energy, Great Western Railway, and Highways England.

Chris Garcia, Chief Executive of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership was also on hand to outline the role of the LEP in championing the area’s potential and attracting investment.  He said: “Economic growth and increased connectivity and productivity are major goals in our Strategic Economic Plan, and these will aid the local business community and their own potential for growth.

“For example, very soon this area will embark on the largest engineering project in Europe with the development of Hinkley Point C, so it’s important that businesses in the Taunton Deane area and indeed the wider south west are at the ready for the many opportunities presented by this transformational project.”

Cllr Mark Edwards, Executive Councillor for Business Development said: “We are very pleased to have secured the Secretary of State for this exceptional event.  It was an excellent opportunity to show the Minister the significant steps that Taunton has taken in recent years, and for local businesses to hear about the Government’s agenda to support business growth.  It is encouraging to see so many local businesses take up the opportunity to hear about plans to improve connectivity and deliver growth in the Borough.”
